1. Raby Castle
Meeting Point: Raby Castle
We begin the Big Smile in the magnificent grounds of Raby Castle. We follow a broad path through the grassy landscape where Red and Fallow Deer herds live wild. We pass the impressively maintained medieval castle, built between 1367 and 1390 by John Neville, the 3rd Baron Neville de Raby.
We wander through Ladywood and then up towards Raby Home Farm and then Shotton enjoying the beautiful countryside home to some superb flora and fauna.
Eventually, we leave the Raby estate and find ourselves heading over Cockfield fell, common land pock marked with evidence of human habitation including flint arrowheads dating back to 8000BC.
We skirt around Cockfield itself and back through the estate to finish back at Raby Castle in a wonderful start to the Big Smile Walks.

Seaham to Nose's Point
Welcome to our first coastal walk, and rest assured, it's just the beginning of countless adventures to come! Starting just south of Seaham, you'll find the first marker post at Chemical beach car park, named after the nearby 19th century chemical works. From here, prepare to be amazed by the breathtaking panoramic views of the Durham heritage coastline, widely considered one of the finest coastlines in England.
As you journey along the route, you'll pass by Jenny's Dene, where an old, abandoned staircase on the opposite cliff tells stories of days gone by. Following a footpath that runs alongside the train track, you'll be surrounded by unique grasslands that provide a perfect habitat for specialized plants and wildlife. Keep an eye out for the Durham Arcus Butterfly, a magnificent creature found only in this area due to its reliance on the Common Rock Rose, which thrives in the grasslands thanks to the magnesian limestone cliffs of the heritage coastline. You may also spot skylarks nesting in the preserved grassland habitat, their songs filling the sky as they soar high above.
Descending the stone steps onto the beach, you'll be greeted by the sight of a majestic sea stack, carved over time by the relentless waves. Take a moment to listen to the soothing sounds of the waves echoing against the cliff face. As you turn left and follow the pebbled beach, known as Blast Beach, you can catch a glimpse of the remains of lookout buildings from World War Two, a reminder of the area's rich history. This beach, named after the blast furnaces, that once deposited industrial waste here in 1862, offers awe-inspiring views and countless opportunities for photography, exploration, and even a friendly stone-skimming competition into the sparkling waters of the North Sea.
To make your way back to Nose Point and the starting point at Chemical Beach car park, a short, steep climb awaits you. Though this coastal route can be completed in just over an hour, it offers a delightful blend of diverse environments, allowing you to truly immerse yourself in the wonders of nature. Embrace the freedom and endless opportunities that being by the coast presents, and revel in the calming nature of walking through the vibrant, colourful grasslands.
So, gather your loved ones, lace up your shoes, and embark on this joyful family adventure together. Let the beauty of nature and the joy of shared experiences fill your hearts as you create memories that will last a lifetime. It's time to embrace the wonders of the coast and all the happiness it holds for you and your family!
